For the past 4 years, the San Gabriel Mountains stole my heart. Its no wonder they are now designating it as a National Monument. On October 10, President Obama set aside 346,000 acres of the San Gabriels to declare a National Monument in effort to link communities east of Los Angeles with the wild. With the San Gabriels lying in the Angeles National forest in Los Angeles county, this gives communities access to hiking, camping fly fishing, cycling, and panning for gold- all of which will not be affected. The monument boasts Alpine peaks and several endangered animals such as the California Condor, Nelson Bighorn sheep, and mountain yellow-legged frogs. As a national monument, the San Gabriels will honor existing property and water rights, public access and rights-of-way for roads and utility infrastructure, administration officials said.

Yesterday morning, a brush fire broke out in the Angeles National Forest. The Colby fire broke out after 3 campers were throwing pieces of toilet paper into their fire and they wind picked up. From there, its burned 5 homes and damaged 17 structures. The fire is 30% contained. The 3 campers that started the fire have been arrested. This just shows how important fire safety is! For more information on how you can prevent forest fires (I know it sounds cliché but its true) check out my Fire Safety tips or Continue reading →

I know I’m a few days late with this issue but by no means should this be ignored! On October 1, 2013, the government shutdown 401 National Parks across our country. All park grounds, visitor centers, hotels, campgrounds, and park roads – except for thru ways – are closed. All programs are canceled and permits issued for special events on park grounds nationwide are rescinded. Hikers and campers were given 2 days to vacate the premises- by October 3. With our nation entering fall, this is one of the busiest times of the year for our nation’s parks. The National Park System Continue reading →

graffiti
This past weekend we camped in Angeles National Forest east of Azusa in Los Angeles. I was walking around taking pictures when I spot graffiti- all over the place! It was announced that popular hiking spots of Joshua Tree are being closed for graffiti as well. Rangers said they’ve found graffiti spray painted on 17 sites, including the famous rock formations and historic Native American sites, at the Southern California park’s Rattlesnake Canyon. Girl survives 6 days on Oregon mountain

Mary Owen, 23, thought she would enjoy a nice hike by herself on March 24, 2013. With whiteout conditions, she soon found herself lost on Mount Hood in Oregon. Owen slipped and fell about 40 feet, fracturing her ankle. She then built a snow cave and lived off of nutri-grain bars, even using the wrappers to start a fire. Owen said it was her faith in God that got her through it. She is an experienced hiker who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. Owen Continue reading →
