Girl survives 6 days on Oregon mountain
Mary Owen, 23, thought she would enjoy a nice hike by herself on March 24, 2013. With whiteout conditions, she soon found herself lost on Mount Hood in Oregon. Owen slipped and fell about 40 feet, fracturing her ankle. She then built a snow cave and lived off of nutri-grain bars, even using the wrappers to start a fire. Owen said it was her faith in God that got her through it. She is an experienced hiker who hiked the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. Owen was rescued on Saturday from a Nation Guard helicopter at 4,600 feet elevation. Owen did everything she could do while stranded- make a shelter and build a fire. Owen said she loves the outdoors and will definitely return!
Wow! Incredible story!

Thankfully, she had a happy ending. Call me harsh, but from my perspective she was incredibly foolish, trying to summit a glacier-clad volcano without the proper gear.

All’s well that ends well, I’ve read this in the news, but there are many parts to the story missing before I’ll pass judgement on if she took the proper precautions.

Very lucky girl – at least she had the skills to see her through it!
