I love camping! I love the outdoors! But I haven’t always been a fan! If you would of told me a few years ago I would be writing an outdoor blog, I would have laughed in your face! But I love it and I wish I would have discovered that a lot sooner! Here are 5 reasons you should go camping:
- Being one with nature. Have you ever taken a hike… like a real hike into the mountains? Its beautiful and peaceful! You really start taking a look at the beauty around you! And bring your camera along! You’d be surprise at the rad pictures you take! I know there’s an inner photographer inside!
- Exercise. One thing great about being outside is the exercise you get! Get moving by hiking in to a spot, setting up your tent, going for a hike, playing games- there are tons of things to do outside! I find being outside makes me motivated to not be lazy!
- Quiet time. If you run out of things to do, just relax! Turn that cell phone off, put the iPod away, and just soak it up! You work hard anyways- you deserve a break and some peace and quiet! Listen to the river running, breeze blowing through the trees, crickets chirping, the bears growling- just kidding! But the other stuff is pretty awesome 🙂
- Its cheap. Ok, let me rephrase that- its cheaper than planning a vacation and once you get your gear, its practically free every time! We save money by going camping on the weekends rather than going out with friends and eating at restaurants!
- Rekindle that relationship. My favorite part about camping is sitting around the camp fire talking about good old times and discussing life! No distractions- just conversation. Its something we don’t see too often any more and we so desperately need!
Happy Camping!!

I love being out of cell range- it is so nice to be “off the grid” and enjoy life without all of the text/email/Facebook distractions.

Being outdoors definitely encourages you to be active. I know people who train for hiking in summer, or for trail runnings. I joke that I train for hunting season, because it’s got a whole ‘nother set of challenges. There aren’t any la-z-boys out in the woods 🙂

I think everyone should take a “non-camper” to a gorgeous camping spot for one night, and see if we can’t get them hooked. We recently found ours in a State Park in Arkansas (of all places – we’re from Michigan!). You can see photos on our blog at http://www.campshaws.com. That post is called Best.Campsite.Ever. Hands down. It wins.
Really enjoying your blog. We should all spend more time outdoors-camping.

Ditto on the exercise! I am so much more motivated to work out when I can do it someplace beautiful. And I always use saving money as a reason… But then I always want to buy new gear. It’s a vicous cycle!

We keep upgrading our gear and that can get expensive
A vicious cycle indeed!

The number one reason should be to disconnect in such a fast paced society. I love going on hikes and camping because when I get back, I feel disloyal to the woods if I go back to checking Facebook and Twitter. I love the disconnect and it helps me stay somewhat disconnected when I come back to “society.”

Absolutely!! I totally agree 🙂 Its like travelling to a different country. You just feel a little different when you get back. More aware of things, wanting less distractions, appreciate more…

A lot of true words said there. I only took it up in my mid-forties – so it is never too late for others to try. To be out with nature with no worries and no distractions is just pure bliss. The scenery? Just the icing on the cake!
And boy does it keep you fit! Without doing any other real exercise, my weight dropped from 13 stone to 10.5 stone and rather ironically I actually eat a lot more!

I love camping. To get away from the hectic day to day. To unplug and reconnect. To cook over the fire and coals. It simply rocks.

Camping is such a great way to reconnect with nature, and to slow down a bit and reconnect with ourselves. It’s easy to do one thing at a time when you are away from all the modern day distractions of life 🙂

Another reason camping is great – if you are watching your pennies, you can travel to many more places and for longer that you’d be able to afford if you had to shell out for a hotel every night instead of a campsite.

Also, camping (especially backpacking) allows you to go places that would be very difficult or impossible otherwise. Want to play on a glacier? Well, you can hike 5+ miles to get to one, frolic, and then hike back out before dark … or you can camp at the snout of the glacier and spend your night stargazing. Easy choice.

Love camping. So relaxing and a good way to bond with family. And also sometimes a good excuse to drink beer during the day.

Sometimes, half the fun of camping is getting to the site. One of my fondest memories is the look on my boyfriend’s face (now husband) when he unpacked his backpack and found a bag of potatoes and family size can of ravioli I placed in it. No wonder he thought it was heavy.
Thanks for enjoying ‘Bloated Tents’.

My favorite part about camping is sitting up late at night and being in awe of just how beautiful the night sky is. And yes I love it when no one can reach me either. Some people go to church to feel god’s “hand” I go to nature.

I too never thought I would be a camper until I did it and then the children and I were hooked. It’s proper time spent together without distractions.
