Los Angeles Camping
Los Angeles is known for celebrities, hot night clubs, and expensive real estate. But one little activity we love to do in LA is camp! Way back in the mountains you’ll find hiking, camping, bungee jumping, fishing, and even gold panning. We took a trip back into those mountains a few weeks ago and Continue reading →

For the past 4 years, the San Gabriel Mountains stole my heart. Its no wonder they are now designating it as a National Monument. On October 10, President Obama set aside 346,000 acres of the San Gabriels to declare a National Monument in effort to link communities east of Los Angeles with the wild. With the San Gabriels lying in the Angeles National forest in Los Angeles county, this gives communities access to hiking, camping fly fishing, cycling, and panning for gold- all of which will not be affected. The monument boasts Alpine peaks and several endangered animals such as the California Condor, Nelson Bighorn sheep, and mountain yellow-legged frogs. As a national monument, the San Gabriels will honor existing property and water rights, public access and rights-of-way for roads and utility infrastructure, administration officials said.

Last weekend, we packed our backpacks full of Cliff bars and dehydrated food and embarked on a night hike into the Angeles National Forest. We arrived in the parking lot at 9:00 PM and while taking out our gear, noticed the high wind gusts. We they felt about 20-30 MPH but nothing we couldn’t handle. As we starting walking, there was an alarming amount of millipedes that were out- I’m pretty sure it was mating season because Continue reading →

campsite review heaton flats cover

Heaton Flats was the campsite that turned me into the camper I am. I went in November 2011. The weather was freezing! I knew nothing about camping! But I fell in love with the tall trees, the stream filled with gold prospectors, and the hike to get to the spot. Continue reading →

hiking the narrows cover

A few weeks ago, we trekked 5 miles into The Narrows, a well-known gold panning spot in the Angeles National Forest back in the San Gabriel mountains. The hike out wasn’t bad. We left at 7:00 AM so the air was still cool, shade in our favor. We arrived around 9:00 AM a little winded but happy to be at our temporary home for the weekend. Coming back was a different story! The Narrows. Awww… sweet sound to my ears! I’ve been working my way to this hiking/camping spot for the past two years! My boyfriend and brother told me it was a hard hike- 5 miles in the heat with hard inclines, climbing over rocks and scaling cliffs. This past weekend- it was my time! I knew my body was ready to take on this challenge and let me tell you- Continue reading →
