I have a post relating our wonderful weekend spent at San Onofre with my girlfriends, but I failed to talk about the actual campsite. San Onofre State Beach is located in San Clemente in sunny Southern California north of San Diego. While the trip was fun, I am hesitant to go back for a few reasons. You MUST book reservations way a head of time (like months in advance) because it fills up quick. Now, this campground is located a hop, skip, and jump away from the beach so that explains why it books up fast but again, let me tell you why I wasn’t too much of a fan.
We stayed on the tent-only on the bluffs. You can see a slight view of the ocean but even more of the 5 freeway. The campsites are basically on top of each other with nothing separating the campsites- not even a single bush. Depending on where you book your spot, the walk to the beach can be pretty lengthy- not including the never ending stairs you have to walk down to get there. Keep this in mind if you plan on bringing your board down to surf. The bathrooms are very accessible so I can’t complain there. Every site has a fire pit and picnic table and the sunset is absolutely amazing! If you like to camp in an RV I would say this is great for you because you have privacy. I would go again but I would prefer more closure between the campsites. All-in-all, its a fun campground but keep in mind the little things that may turn you off.
