What type of camp stoves did you guys use? MSR? I have the Optimus Crux and I was a bit disappointed with how it performed in cold 20 degree weather. Had trouble holding a flame.
Yes MSR Micro Rocket. We love it and it cooks hamburgers great and boils water very quickly! Its around $60 I think. We just got my brother the MSR Pocket Rocket and we like it even better because the prongs fold out easier- $40 I think.
Cool thanks for the info! I looked at those before I bought my Optimus. Looks like from the research I’ve been doing this morning it’s not so much the stove that is the issue…it’s the gas. I’m reading that the iso/propane tanks don’t handle the cold well. Thankfully hubs has another stove that works great in cold, just a bit bulkier.
That food looks delicious – just wish I had the space in my rucksack to take ‘real’ food along! Alas, I have to stick with Freeze Dried, which whilst good isn’t in the same league as what your cooking there!
I know! We spoil ourselves when we bring our cars but when backpacking we are just like you- dehydrated foods all the way! My favorite is the chili with mac n cheese! 🙂
Looks great! Something about the smell of sausage cooking in the winter air…

Nice! That makes sense. Our propane got stuck to the table after we used it because of the cold but we were able to free it! haha!
