I’ve considered keeping something like this as a backup water source when overlanding… Light, easy to keep on board, can go backpacking… lots of advantages.

But I hate pumping water! I’ve done so much squatting, and balancing while wearing out my poor bicep. I’ve switched entirely to gravity filters and the Steripen.

Understandable on the pumping water! Look like you found what works for you and that’s always best 🙂

These are really handy filters, and usually the pump based water filters are the best as they require pressure to force water through the filter instead of it just flowing through, which suggests this water filter, filters water better than most filters. While this filter may filter better than some of the water filters on the market, you still have to be wary on what kind of water filter you are using, as you want to ensure that it will remove all of the bacteria in the water.

I was using a Steripen (UV purifier) for a while, but I don’t like relying on electronics and batteries for something as important as water. Still, the weight was pretty compelling; a typical pump weighs a pound, a Steripen is 4 to 6 oz depending on the model.
I’ve recently switched to a Sawyer Mini. Instead of pumping the water through a filter, you squeeze the bag or bottle it’s in, or use gravity. The Sawyer is 2 oz. It works very well with bladders, like a Platypus (about 1 oz in 1L size), making it easier to leave the heavy Nalgeen (about 6 oz in 1L size) at home.
On the other hand, 1L of water weighs 2.2 lbs, and probably isn’t enough for a day hike. So anything you have that treats water is going to take a lot of weight off your back.
