Panning For Gold Process

We went to Heaton Flats in San Gabriel Canyon to camp and pan for gold. The process is easy- just a lot of labor- and finding the right spot! Here is the process:

• Find  a good spot near a river or stream
• Dig down a ways (gold is heavy so it sinks down- won’t be on the top layer)
• Have either a bucket for dirt or place in your pan
• If using a sluice, dump dirt onto sluice (a device used to seperate fine dirt and gold from bigger rocks)
• Dump the remaining contents from sluice into a bucket to pan
• Slowly wash away dirt in your pan

It takes time but it is fun and you can be successful!
