My Wish List for 2013
I need to break my camping regimen and mix it up- my pictures are starting to look the same! So I wanted to put down on paper my goals for 2013 (or put it down on the good ol’ keyboard)!I’ve been talking about these 5 spots and how I would LOVE to go camping there so as all of you as my witness, I kinda have to do this! If anyone would like to throw out suggestions, I’m all ears!
**Kauai made the list because I have the oppertunity to go this year so hopefully we can make it to the beautiful canyon!
- Yosemite
- Big Sur
- Joshua Tree
- Catalina Island
- Kauai, Waimea Canyon
You will love Kaua‘i. My wife is a native of Hawai‘i, and while I haven’t been to that particular spot myself, the word from her family is that it is drop dead gorgeous in person.
Good luck hitting all the spots!

Thanks! And I guess since I’m going there, I should probably learn how to spell Kaua’i right! Haha!

LOL That’s okay. Even a lot of Hawaiians don’t bother with the ‘okina (backwards comma). I just use it all the time because I recently discovered how to type it on my Mac keyboard.

That’s a good list! Now is the time to head to Joshua Tree – before spring rolls around and the temperatures start to soar. We used to go in February and while it was cold at night it was usually decent enough during the day. Not sure if things have changed but you might want to double check on the water situation – the sites we used to camp in we had to bring in all the water we would need while we were there.

I literally live right outside of JTNP (Joshua Tree National Park) and I LOVE going there. I’m a local photographer, and I shoot there regularly. I’ve camped in the Jumbo Rocks Campground toward the very back. At about 3am everyone who owns a gazzillion dollar telescope darts out to the huge, breathtaking rocks and watch the stars. It’s still astounding to me how many more stars you can see out there than you can see from my house. Mind you, these cities/towns/villages out here are HUGE on zero light pollution — trying to keep it at a minimum at all times. We camped at March/Apr and were freezing our butts off but we are from MI originally so we were use to it.

In Kaua`i, be aware that it rains a *LOT* in Waimea Canyon. That said, it is gorgeous. Do go! You won’t be disappointed.
Also, don’t miss the Kalalau trail. You’ll be hiking above the Na Pali Coast! You can do it as a day hike, but camping is way better. God, I miss Hawaii!
Your other choices are also good, but here are a few more:
The Enchanted Lakes in Washington State. You need a relatively hard-to-get permit to camp there, but trust me, it’s worth it. It’s a unique and magical place. Google it to see what I mean. The best time to visit is in the late summer or in October. The former has the best weather, but during the latter the larches turn golden!
Grand Canyon: hike down to the bottom of the canyon, or camp out on the rim. Sunrises and sunsets are awesome! The only bad thing about the trails is the donkey doo (it really stinks!).
Mt. Rainier: camp anywhere, and you will love it (there is a reason that this was the fifth national park). The best time is in late August when all the wildflowers are blooming. OTOH, snow camping in the park during winter is also fun. At minimum, you don’t have to put up with crowds.
I could go on and on, but I hope you will consider adding at least one of these to your bucket list.

Awesome! Thank you so much for the suggestions! I can’t believe I forgot the Grand Canyon!! That is definitely one I need to do! Also, I looked at Mount Rainier and Enchanted Lake and they look absolutely beautiful!! If I can’t get around to adding them there is always a 2014 bucket list 🙂 Thanks again!!!

The best time to do Yosemite is actually the last two weeks of October and the first week of November. The crowds go away, the air is crisp, and the leaves are spectacular. And if you are looking at Joshua Tree, you should consider driving a little farther to also check out Mojave Preserve. It is lovely.

You’ve put together an impressive list. I’ve lived in Oregon for the past 10 years and camping is a big part of the culture here girly or otherwise. I’ve worked for 8 years as a whitewater rafting guide here in Oregon and nothing beats the wild and scenic section of the Rogue River. You can either through hike the river trail or hire a guide service to take you down in a raft and spend nights camped along the river bank. And, if you boyfriend is really into gold prospecting tell him to bring a gold pan because you’re almost guaranteed to come home with a little color! You can check out our guide service at highdesertriver.com for information on the Rogue and many other great camping adventures here in Oregon!

Awesome! Good to know! My brother went up to Oregon last spring and found a little color but wasn’t up there too long. I will check that out and thanks!!

Good list. As a Yosemite corollary, consider Kings Canyon. All the beauty of Yosemite without the teeming hordes. And much easier to get a permit!
