I figured it was a function of my age – I grew up with most of my windows to the world being monochromatic. News magazines didn’t have color interior photos until the mid-to-late 80s and color televisions were few and far between. I think because of those restrictions creative people had to be better in other areas – better composition, better handling of light/dark/shadow and in the case of movies/TV the writing had to be that much better. You couldn’t fall back on color to dazzle the viewer.
And…some of the best movies are black and white. And not all of them are “ancient” either. Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” comes to mind.

Beautiful pictures! I think color can sometimes take away from a picture, I much prefer black and white.
