For past camping trips, we were so fixated on prospecting for gold that we never opened our eyes to the beauty around us! Here is a glimpse of the beauty at Paso Picacho campground at Cuyamaca in east San Diego!
Prospecting for gold while camping. How intriguing. I need to get in on that action in my next camping trip. Excellent photos btw. I particularly like the large tree shot. Thanks.
Thanks! The tree shot is my favorite too! Yeah, you should try panning! Its a great activity and we find gold everytime we go… its nothing to retire on but its still fun 🙂
HAHA! Mainly in the San Gabriel mountains (Angeles National Forest) in Los Angeles. There is lots of info online for where to pan. It just depends on where you live.
Thanks for the info. I live on St. Simons Island, Georgia, and had never thought of this. I’m planning a long spring camping trip, and will do my research. Thanks for a novel idea.
Of course! And what we do is exactly what everyone thinks- sitting by a stream and panning for gold like like in the old west! Nothing new and “techy” about it- that’s what I love!
Beautiful photos! Makes me look forward to being able to get outdoors more myself. I need to figure out how to afford the gear I need to keep myself and 3 little kids safe and warm, which is my biggest stubling block right now but we’ve been enjoying short, local, daytime hikes.
Thank you! It took us about 1 year to get all our gear and now we just do upgrades- which is nice! I don’t have kids so I’m not sure how that would be camping with little ones- especially at places where its not as populated! Day trips are always great though!
I’m figuring that while they are little (right now they are ages 4, 2 and 9 months!) we will stick with state parks and well marked trails 🙂 I grew up camping, though, and would love to get back to it (it’s been a long time!) and raise my daughters with a love and appreciation for getting out into nature.
Starting with the minimalist things we need and can afford and upgrading over the years will probably be our best bet.
Awesome pictures, love the big tree also!! Not done the gold thing, but dug for Herkimer Diamonds once and found a couple of nice ones. Might have to research this gold thing, thank you!

Without giving away any “prospector” secrets, where do you do this panning?
