It took a little bit for me to go camping but once I did, I fell in love! But the hardest part was the first time! I didn’t know what to expect, what to pack, what to do when I got there! Guys, if you’re having a hard time convincing the lady to go camping, here are 5 ways that may pursue her:
- Pick a time that has good weather. Don’t go when its freezing cold or ridiculously hot- that’s just setting yourself up for failure! Go in spring or fall- trust me 🙂
- Make sure there is a bathroom! I should put that as number 1 actually! Don’t scare into squatting right away. That’s something you have to build up to…. late at night when its cold outside, she’s in the tent and doesn’t want to get up to go pee but HAS to…. she’ll squat outside. She’ll give in- you just have to give her time!
- Tell her to bring her hobby with her. Whether its reading, playing Sudoku, or taking pictures- if she associates something she loves with a new interest, it may be a success!
- Bring a fun group of people! Don’t go just the two of you. It may sound romantic but you’ll just end up trying to entertain her… or get really sick of hearing her complain! If you involve your friends, that’s an amazing time already! (If you get HER friends to go, its even better!)
- Let her be girly- don’t judge or get mad. Remember- she is doing this for YOU not HER! She could have said no like the last 7 times you asked her to go camping but guess what?! She’s camping!! So embrace and move on!
OK- I’m dying to here any other tips! Some people I know just WILL NOT go camping! Is there anything else to get those girly girls (or sissy boys) out in the wild?!

Great tips! I would also recommend making your first trip somewhere cool– some place with an amazing view, or near water where you can swim, etc. Ideally, it would be a place that you can only enjoy by camping. Make the destination different and interesting!

This is awesome! I always have soo much trouble getting girls to come camping with my friends and I, and Its always because some group of frat kids took them camping, and had no idea what they were doing. Definitely going to take a bunch of this advice. Thanks for the post!

Excellent tips, so you are saying that telling her we are heading to a luxury resort then expecting her to be exited with an empty field is a no go then? Haha!

Don’t go for long. Start off with one or two nights relatively close to home. That’s enough for the whole thing to be a fun novelty, but not long enough for him/her to become too dirty, get bored of the other campers’ company, or realize that putting a tent up in the rain is fun once, but not fun three days in a row!

That is a GREAT tip!! YES! Don’t go for too long! Most of our trips involve getting there Friday night and leaving Sunday morning- the perfect time frame for a girly girl!

What about the opposite problem – getting The Prince to join the girls in the great outdoors? What seems to work in our case (not always, and it’s expensive) is letting him go to an outdoor store and look at the gear. Guys love gear, even if they don’t need it. We’ve found The Prince is more likely to be interested if he has some new camping technology to try out.

I had to drag my husband winter camping the first time (now he loves it!). I used a combination of poking fun (Come on, Princess! It’s just a little snow!) and guilt tripping (I went with you to one of YOUR activities, now you have to come with me). Probably not the best method, but it worked! lol And, I agree with you Kelly, my husband is into the new gear aspect as well. He could bankrupt us if he bought all the cool new stuff that he wants to!

Involve her in the prep work, like meal planning and some of the packing. It will make her feel part of the team and not just tagging along.

Maybe just try taking her on a “day trip” to start, joining a camping group and just staying for the day, could make her see how fun it can be for the “whole” weekend!

Well said. Once you treat a lady like a lady in the woods, you are golden. You’ll have a camping buddy for life!! Maybe bring some candles and make a romantic BBQ dinner.

Awesome advice! My wife and I went backpacking for our honeymoon. I was tired of boring vacations so she said pick what you want and I will go. So after we got gear and researched for months we tried a 40 mile week long trip. I have to say we disagreed more often then not; but we got amazing pictures and some of the best bonding time we have ever had. My best tip is let her decide time and place. She was able to become interested the more she researched and feel more apart of the process. 🙂

Comfortable bedding–we use Thermarests and down filled bags, and are always comfy at night. Makes a huge difference! (Also, just FYI, I was the one who introduced my husband to camping. He loves it!)

Go for a few day hikes first. Ones with spectacular payoffs.
We went for an overnight backpack the first time. She didn’t want to be in a campground with other people, she was pretty adamant about it. Then she discovered that a flat spot near the river doesn’t have bathrooms, and really hated squatting in the woods. It rained. I’m surprised she wants to go camping again.
Next trip, we’re going kayak camping on a glacial lake.

Very good tips especially numbers 1 and 2. I know of a lot of girls put off by the cold and then toilet needs! Bring plenty of toilet roll too!
