Saturday afternoon, my boyfriend and I took on the challenge of Cowles Mountain- a mountain located in heart of east county San Diego in between Santee and La Mesa. There are several different trails to take and we took the hardest (yes, I’m bragging 🙂 ). The back side of Cowles boasts an 1,100 gain in elevation and is roughly 5 miles round trip- compared to the 800 elevation gain and 3 mile round trip of the easier, more populated trail. It was fun but tough! I was definitely doubting my physical strength and endurance during this hike! Take a look at the pictures I took along the way!

Great shots – did you see any wildlife other than people on your hike?

We saw a few lizards, no snakes, nothing crazy! We are going again tonight so hopefully we’ll see something!

Very nice! I can’t believe I’m reading about hiking in San Diego county! I lived there for seven years (Coronado, Imperial Beach, La Mesa, Mission Beach and Kearny Mesa) and didn’t ever hear of anyone on the trails. Good for you! Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions about your blog construction?

Great hiking out there. Was there on “business” for a conference a few years back, spent more time on trails then I did at the conference! Such a beautiful difference from my home turf of New England.

I used to trail run at Cowles mountain all the time. I thought it was closed for trail maintenance — I guess its open now? Great photos, thanks for sharing!

It looks gorgeous! You have certainly earned the awe and admiration of the deerslayer’s wife. I think I would’ve bartered the camera for a ride on someone’s shoulders back to the bottom!

Its a beautiful hike, isn’t it! SO different from the hiking here in NH. Here, you get to the top of the mountain and you see….more mountains! I loved looking down from the top and seeing civilization. My daughter and family are moving back to the east coast in the fall, so not sure I’ll be getting out to San Diego again for a long, long time. Love your pictures!
